Allergy

Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander. The presence of an allergen triggers the release of the body's defenses, such as histamines which cause the runny nose and itchy eyes with which many allergy sufferers are familiar. Allergies can cause symptoms that involve your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system. The severity of allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor irritation to life-threatening emergency. While allergies can't be cured, a number of treatments can help relieve your allergy symptoms. Several members of the Family Medical Specialties staff have taken specialized training in allergy diagnosis and treatment.
